The multicultural life to studying abroad in the UK

Taiga has been living with us since day one of HAKUSAN HOUSE. He is the first to experience our slogan, “student life isn’t just about hitting the books”. His next step is to study abroad in the UK. We wanted to hear stories of how he learned about us and where he is at now.

【The encounter with UNINEST】

UNINEST:Hello Taiga! Thank you so much for making time for us! I know how busy you are with all the packing!

TAIGA:No worries! Thanks for having me!

UNINEST:Okay so let’s get started. Could you please tell me where you’re from and the school you are currently going to?

TAIGA:I’m from Takahagi city in Ibaragi, it’s surrounded by mountains and beaches. I’m currently a junior at Toyo University and I’m studying International Communications.

UNINEST:International Communications!? That’s exactly the lifestyle you can experience at Uninest!

TAIGA:Yep, exactly!

UNINEST:How did you hear about us?

TAIGA:Well, when I first came to Tokyo I lived alone in an apartment. But it was so small and in the back of my mind I had a thought of living in a share house. Then during my sophomore year, I stumbled across HAKUSAN HOUSE by chance. I walked in through the entrance and the front staff welcomed me so cheerfully. Of course, I didn’t make any reservations to view the dorm, but they asked me if I wanted to look around. And I knew instantly that I wanted to live here!

UNINEST:Wow! That’s so great to hear! What about HAKUSAN HOUSE appealed to you?

TAIGA:Well, I originally wanted to learn English through everyday life so being able to live in an atmosphere that gave the vibe of studying abroad attracted me the most. Hm, also I really liked the common areas because I wouldn’t be able to experience that living alone.

There are so many people with a different cultural background and they all gather around talking or studying in the lounge, the theater room, and the best of all was the rooftop!

I traveled around the world as a backpacker before I started living in HAKUSAN HOUSE, so I was super excited to use real English, not textbook English.

UNINEST:Haha! Especially since when you came into the dorm, there were more than 100 people living here, but only a few Japanese people!

TAIGA:Yeah seriously! It really felt like I was studying abroad. In the morning, when I woke up in the 6 people room, I heard French and English jumping around the room. And I kept thinking to myself, “wait… Which country am I in right now?”

【What I learned from this multicultural life】

UNINEST:How was it like living here after a year?

TAIGA:Well, first and foremost, my English-speaking skills went up. In the beginning I was cooking in the kitchen and I was the only Japanese person there. I couldn’t understand anything they were saying…

Being in an atmosphere where English is flying around nonstop is not something you can experience in class. It was so difficult to keep up with their conversations… But now I can finally understand most of what they’re saying and say what I want!

UNINEST:That’s amazing! Using English in your daily life as a non-English speaker seems very difficult but having the motivation of wanting to speak with your friends is incredible!

TAIGA:Also living in a diverse environment! Anyway, I learned to have a broader mind and learned to accept different ways of thinking. Being in an atmosphere of people from different countries, schools, ages; they all have or are searching for their own future vision. It was so inspiring to know that there are so many different perspectives, pathways, and possibilities. It was a great way to reflect on myself and think of my future again too.

As I went out with these people, I firmly believed that everyone is different and everyone knows that about one another. I know it may be obvious to some people, but that was a discovery for me. Before I used to overthink what the other person would think of me, so I hesitated to go and talk to new people. But in the end, I gained enough confidence to be able to talk to new people right away, leading me to make lots of new friends! I learned to understand many differences amongst people.

UNINEST:Well, now whenever we have new students coming in, you’re the one who welcomes them into our community. You’re pretty much the center of it all! We really value community, so we appreciate what you’re doing here, Taiga!

【Regarding the RA job】

UNINEST:Well, Taiga, you work here as an RA, helping out the staff run this dorm. How was your job as an RA? How did you feel about it?

TAIGA:It’s so difficult to find a job where you can use both English and Japanese, especially as a student, so it was such a valuable experience! Plus, it’s a 30 second commute! Lol. Of course, we get to experience the real world and there were responsibilities too. But I liked how the main staff would actually put my ideas into use too.

Being able to experience planning events and running them was the best experience as an RA. I learned so much on how plans are actually put into effect, and it was so difficult to think of ways that everyone from all over the world would actually enjoy. When an event was successful, my heart was filled with joy!!!

【Why are you studying abroad in the UK?】

UNINEST:So, you’ve lived in HAKUSAN HOUSE for a year, and now you’re heading off to the UK, why is that?

TAIGA:Hmmm, I guess you can say that I found the right pathway for me? This whole time, I’ve been wanting to live abroad, but I didn’t understand English at all. So I thought maybe I should go study abroad.

But as I lived here, I realized I naturally acquired English already. So, then I thought to myself, *wait a minute… What’s my purpose of studying abroad? It’s not for English anymore… So what’s my next step?”

I knew I wanted to keep living in a diverse environment and from my job as an RA, I got interested in the world of business. I then found the perfect uni in the UK, so that was it!

And a lot of the friends I made in HAKUSAN HOUSE live in Europe now, THAT’S the icing on the cake. I’m definitely going on a trip around Europe to see them. Not a lot of people get to experience having friends all over the world!

【A message from a former UNINEST resident

UNINEST:Okay, well, last but not least, please give a message to those who are reading this interview!

TAIGA:Well, a lot of people, including myself, think that in order to master English, you need to go abroad to America, Australia or Canada.

But I now think that you can start by looking for a place in Tokyo to experience “studying abroad”.

This allows us to find a different purpose to studying abroad - not just for acquiring English.

UNINEST:That’s such a wonderful message! Experiencing the ultimate student life, and then moving forward. We will also work really hard for this place to be more appealing so we can confidently root for you to move up another step.

Taiga, thank you so, so much! We are excited to hear your experiences when you get back from the UK!

TAIGA:Thank YOU so much. I will definitely keep you updated on my life in the UK!

Opening soon! A tour of Uninest’s second dorm in Tokyo, Kamikitazawa Vol.3

Have you heard of the theory, finding a room is like finding a significant other?

For example…

A comfortable room = A person who makes you feel at home

A spacious room with lots of storages = A person with a capacious mind

A chic room = A classy person

See? It IS similar!

It’s so difficult to find the perfect room, let alone in TOKYO? No way.

There are so many rooms in Tokyo, it’s so hard to choose the perfect one!

I wouldn’t want to regret my decision…

And I wouldn’t want to go all the way to Tokyo for a viewing.

In order to avoid a mismatch, accumulating information is key.

So, here’s a solution!

Here, we will introduce our model rooms at KAMIKITA HOUSE, opening in March 2020!

The rooms at Uninest residences give the vibe of “luxurious hotel” with lots of storage capacity.

In our last tour, we introduced common spaces such as the kitchen.

In this volume, we will focus on the actual rooms that you’ll live in!

There are three types of rooms,

all of which include shower rooms, restrooms, and sinks! This said, the characteristics of each differ depending on type.

【Single Room(Premium Nest)】

After some chitchatting with your friends in the common space, you’ll get some alone time in your room.

The relaxing hotel-like ambience is all yours to enjoy!

The outlets are located around your bed and desk so you can focus on your studies, especially during crunch time.

You also have the freedom to use the shower and bathroom whenever you want. That’s a plus, right?

【Two-person Apartment(Duo nest)】

This would be the perfect room for you if you want some privacy, but you also want some company.

Hmmm… What should I put under my bed? Clothes? Bags?

In the middle of the room are two beds separated by a wall. So you are guaranteed privacy!

The sun shining through the window is so nice!

Even people who own tons of clothes are satisfied with the amount of storage we have! (There’s a closet that’s about the same size as the one in Premium Nest).

There’s also a fridge in each individual room, so you can stock some food and drinks too.

【6-person Apartment (Share Nest)】

This room is for those who love being around people.

You’ll hear all sorts of languages flying around the room!

Any valuables can be stored in your lockable drawer.

And look! There’s a retractable desk so it doesn’t take up much space!

You can organize all your things like clothes, shoes, and books in all of these storage places.

There are two sinks, shower rooms, and restrooms in each 6-person apartment, so let’s share them all with your roommates!

Personally, we think the heated multifunctioning toilets, manufactured by TOTO, are one of the highlights.

TOTO is famous in Japan for creating the most excellent household appliances. These high-tech toilets have fans all over the world!

Everyone has things they can’t compromise when finding a room.

We wonder if you’ve found the right room here at KAMIKITA.

We hope you did! *fingers crossed*

Living at KAMIKITA HOUSE would be such an exciting experience!

Please inquire for a reservation to view the dorm – either in person or via video phone!

We really hope that KAMIKITA HOUSE is the one for you!

Opening soon! A tour of Uninest’s second dorm in Tokyo, Kamikitazawa Vol.2

You’re starting a new life and the next thing on your agenda is finding a new home.

Hmm… What would I look for in a new home?

Uhh… A place that’s fairly new…

maybe a place that has chic interior designs…

somewhere that’s accessible…

Well, we have the perfect place for you! KAMIKITA HOUSE!

A dorm where students from all over the world get together is opening shortly in Kamikitazawa!

The nearest stations are Kamikitazawa and Sakurajosui on the Keio Line.

Located in Suginami Ward, it’s an area with a retro feel.
It’s also easily accessible for one of the biggest and busiest areas in Tokyo - Shinjuku!

We have so many universities located near us! We have Nihon University, the Izumi campus for Meiji University, and the Komaba campus for Tokyo University.
In Setagaya Ward, there’s Komazawa University and Tokyo University of Agriculture. See? You don’t hear that very often, ESPECIALLY in Tokyo.

As you walk about 8 minutes from Kamikitazawa station…

BAM! Here we are!

KAMIKITA HOUSE!

Right now it’s quiet since we’re still doing the final prep and have no residents yet.
BUT we’re already gearing up to welcome tons of students to come live with us once we open in March 2020!

The perfect place to relax and chat with your friends is located on the first-floor lounge.

We have a multi-function copier and scanner, perfect for your school reports!

Fully-kitted out kitchens where you can cook with your friends!

We even have dishwashers, ovens, and of course, cutlery, so don’t you fret!

Here in this residence, only students can become residents, so obviously you’ll want some nice space to study.
If you really need a place to concentrate, go ahead and use our designated coworking space and study rooms!

Studying for exams… having meetings… doing homework… It’s really up to you on how you utilize these places.

Up at the top of the building, there’s a terrace where you can hang your clothes after you do laundry.

On a REAL nice day, you can even see, *drum roll* the one and only, *drum roll* MT. FUJI from the rooftop!!! Sorry, got a bit excited there. Haha

It’ll be so nice to have a BBQ or to soak up some sun here on the 4th floor terrance! *Warning* LEGITIMATE SUNBATHING IN SWIMSUITS IS NOT ALLOWED!! Just FYI.

KAMIKITA HOUSE is so close to completion.
We’re already super excited to see who’s coming to live with us!

In the next volume, we’ll show you around the model rooms(Vol.3). Be back real soon!

Opening soon! A tour of Uninest’s second dorm in Tokyo, Kamikitazawa Vol.1

Hello~

We’re opening a new home for Uninest in March of 2020!

Yup, you got it. It’s the KAMIKITA HOUSE!

We’re so excited!

Today, our staff went to go see the still under construction KAMIKITA HOUSE so allow me to share the experience!

As we walk towards the site from one of the nearest station, Kamikitazawa, we see…

View of KAMIKITA under construction

AN ENORMOUS BUILDING…!!!!

Most of our staff members haven’t seen the venue yet, so we were all very stoked.
AND it’s not always that we get to see a building that is still under construction!

Staff listening with full concentration

As we were being explained of what’s going to be built where, we all imagined the lively atmosphere that is soon to come after it opens.

Ready for battle!

But! Before we start anything, we need helmets. Safety first, kids!

1F outdoor corridor and garden

We went straight to the shared kitchen since the lounge and living room weren’t ready yet.

The picture above is the outdoor passage on the way.
Beautiful, eh?
In the evening, the lights will be on so can you imagine how even nicer it’s gonna look?

And that door in the middle is the entrance to the shared kitchen!

One of our share kitchens

Whoaaaaaa!!!!!
Look how nice the kitchen is!

Of course, there will be kitchenware by the time you guys arrive, so don’t worry.
There you see, tables and sofas in the middle. Oh boy, I can just picture students cooking, eating and having an amazing time here!

We’re also embedding LCD monitors on the walls so you can watch movies or youtube videos while you eat!

Just from all of this, you can tell it’s better than living alone in an apartment…!
We’ll also have ovens, microwaves, and rice cookers, so you can cook all kinds of meals!
If you’re not so much of a cook, then… maybe your friends will cook for you…?
Then you’ve GOT to make friends quickly here at Kamikita! It’s either that or you learn how to cook… or both!

Isn’t this just exciting? I’m already hyped up!

Well, that’s all for today folks!

Well, that’s all for today folks!
The other areas are still under construction so we couldn’t show you around much, but in our next episode(Vol.2)(Vol.3) we’ll make sure to give out more info! Stay in tune!
